The Community Service Society of New York founded RSVP in 1966 as a pilot project to provide retirees the opportunity to use their time, talents and lifetime of experience. In 1971, RSVP became part of ACTION (the former federal domestic volunteer agency).
RSVP is now one of three National Senior Service Corps programs funded and administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. This federal corporation, formed in 1993, engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in community-based service.
Locally, Bensenville Home Society saw the value of the program and in 1972 formed one of the first RSVP projects in the country. In January 1992, The Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago became the sponsor of RSVP. Starting in 1999, project boundaries were changed to include only northern DuPage County as well as northern Cook County.
